Burlington Strategic PlanFreeman Station has a website, can now receive donations (and issue tax receipts for over $25) and is taking memberships ($10 annually). We’re also selling prints of the Freeman Station ($225 framed or $80 unframed), and holding a fundraiser at Emma’s Back Porch on April 28. Join us!

Campaign expenses are now posted online. The biggest spender didn’t always win, including in Ward 2. My total spent: $20,107.38.Total raised: $8,731.Amount from developers = 0. Contributions under $100=$1,936.02. Contributions over $100= $6,795; Contributions from Burlington residents: 100% (75% living in Ward 2).

A new elementary school in the Orchard scheduled to open in 2011 will be named after Ward 2 resident John William Boich, who died last month. It’s a fitting tribute to this community builder who devoted a lifetime to educating and mentoring others.

The strategic plan for Burlington has begun. Fill out our survey, download a workbook, or host a small group meeting to discuss what you want Burlington to be in 10 years.

Public meetings – everyone welcome

Nalco Canada, April 19, 7:30-9pm, 1055 Truman St. Local business Nalco invites neighbours to their open house. Meet & greet, and Q&A.

Ward 2 Advisory Committee, April 21, 7-9pm, Rm 247, City Hall. Join fellow residents to discuss city-wide and Ward 2 issues, concerns and developments. Held monthly. Everyone welcome.

Freeman Station fundraiser, April 28, 6-10pm, Emma’s Backporch, 2084 Old Lakeshore Rd. Join community efforts to save Freeman Station by attending this fundraiser, including buffet dinner, door prizes, raffle. Tickets: $30 adults; $15 children (10 and under). Community Cleanup, April 30, 9-12am; BBQ at City Hall 12:30-2:30. Rally your neighbours for our annual community cleanup, sponsored by BurlingtonGreen. Register and order free supplies here, then join us for the post event BBQ.

A Better Burlington began in 2006 after my neighbours said they felt left out of city decisions, learning about them only after they’d been made.

As journalist for 22 years, I thought “I can do something about that” and a website and newsletter were born. They’ve taken various forms and names over the years, but the intent remains: To let you know what’s happening at City Hall before decisions are made, so you can influence outcomes for A Better Burlington.

The best decisions are made when elected representatives tap the wisdom of our community members, and welcome many different perspectives.This site allows residents to comment and debate with each other; our Commenting Guidelines established in 2016 aim to keep debate respectful.
