Survey: Have your say on second ticketed event in Spencer Smith Park for Sound of Music Festival

Survey deadline Dec. 14

Adapted from a City of Burlington press release — The Burlington Sound of Music Festival would like to add a second ticketed event in Spencer Smith Park on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 1 to 9 p.m. There is already an existing paid event on the Saturday, the weekend before the festival.

The festival organizers would like to know if there is community support for the second ticketed event, and have created a survey to seek public input. The survey can be found at

The short, one-question survey will be open until Dec. 14, 2017.

BackgroundThe festival has had a paid event since 2015 to support free public performances over four days on the Father’s Day weekend, and help ensure a quality festival for years to come.

In 2017, a second event was added to help celebrate Canada 150 which was very well attended.

Dave Miller, executive director of the Sound of Music Festival, explained the request this way:

“With the success of last year’s additional day on Sunday, June 11 in honour of Canada 150 and the growing popularity of the ticketed Kick-off Concert, we’re hoping to have the Kick-off event for Sound of Music Festival 2018 running for two days instead of one, making it a full weekend experience. Proceeds will support overall costs of the event including stages, security and great musical talent.”

A Better Burlington began in 2006 after my neighbours said they felt left out of city decisions, learning about them only after they’d been made.

As journalist for 22 years, I thought “I can do something about that” and a website and newsletter were born. They’ve taken various forms and names over the years, but the intent remains: To let you know what’s happening at City Hall before decisions are made, so you can influence outcomes for A Better Burlington.

The best decisions are made when elected representatives tap the wisdom of our community members, and welcome many different perspectives. This site allows residents to comment and debate with each other; our Commenting Guidelines established in 2016 aim to keep debate respectful.

  1. I’d like to see the sound of music expand its repertoire to include a day of jazz or blues
How about a classical Sunday and maybe music from around the world
