Staff recommend modified approval of 5-storey building at 2085 Pine

City staff are recommending modified approval of a rezoning for 2085 Pine Street to permit a five (5) storey, 15-unit apartment building at 2085 Pine. The existing historic building at the south end of the
property is proposed to be retained and repurposed as amenity space for the residents of the proposed apartment building.

The property is currently zoned ‘Downtown Medium Density Residential (DRM)’ which permits a
range of residential uses, including apartment buildings up to a maximum of 3 storeys in height.

Burlington City staff have reviewed the application along with the comments received from the public
and technical agencies to date. Staff will be recommending modified approval of the amendment to the City’s Planning and Development Committee of Council, details below.

My Take: This application has gone through multiple revisions since first introduced based on resident and staff input, which has improved the final proposal. Pending review of the staff report when it is released Sept. 18, and any further input from residents, I am prepared to support the application and will ask that retention and formal heritage designation of the historic building be part of the approval. The applicant already plans to retain the home. Designation protects the building going forward.

How to Obtain the Staff Report:

The staff recommendation report which contains the proposed zoning by-law as well as discussion and review of the application, will be available for public review on September 18, 2017. The report will be available on the City’s website at by searching for the meeting date for the Planning and Development Committee. A copy of the report can also be picked up at the City Clerk’s Department on the main level of City Hall.

Should you wish to be notified of City Council’s decision to approve, refuse, or approve with modification this application, or of any subsequent Ontario Municipal Board appeal of this matter, you must submit a written request to the Clerk’s Department to the attention of Amber LaPointe. If you do not include your name and address with written comments about the application or speak at the public meeting, you may not be able to appeal the decision of Council to the Ontario Municipal Board or appear as a Party to any future Hearing about this issue.
