For some time, city staff have been spread over a variety of buildings in the downtown and elsewhere, with leases coming for renewal at various periods. City staff will be providing a presentation on administrative space needs at the Committee of the Whole-Workshop meeting March 2, 1pm. To review the agenda for the meeting visit:

  1. Nice big lot at Ghent and Brant….don’t know what the developers have in mind but a lot that size could fit all of the administrative space needed plus parking…and still be “downtown”.but guess the price would be out of sight.

  2. One thing downtown needs if it is going to come close to attaining this high density utopia is a decent grocery store with some parking. If City Hall were to ever move, that would be something sorely needed that could be worked in to a new development.

    • I would like to see better options for grocery shopping downtown too, however I don’t think the economics are going to work in the short term. Surface parking isn’t going to happen with land values being what they are in the core. And providing a garage costs a lot more up front.

      More boutique-type options are probably more realistic. Possibly with considerably more customers in the vicinity – something like the Metro store across from St. Lawrence Market which is built into an 8 story condo might work.

      I wouldn’t be surprised if things got worse before they got better as far as grocery shopping is concerned. No Frills at Brant & Victoria has got to be thinking about the options they have for that huge property. Only hope there is enough of a market downtown to make something like the above feasible, because otherwise we are creating a food desert which makes intensification that much more difficult on residents. That’s one of the big risks of “underintensification” that our planners talk about.

      • A smaller Toronto-like Sobeys on the bottom floor of one of these new condo buildings could be done without the need of a ton of parking. Toronto has boutique chain grocery stores if the local businesses are not going to do so.

        As for city hall, there is a development proposal right across from city hall. Why not agree to a certain height negotiating an increase in office space for city hall, and reduced cost for the lease? The city has some power here, why not use it rather than fight it, and not make smart decisions.

  3. I suggest the city hall be moved to harvester Rd or main way…
    a new building could be build or an older building retrofitted where all the city hall staff could be under one roof..
    The land on Brant could be sold to a developer.. we need more density in order to create a downtown where more decent shops will survive… and I gather from people in retail/food services downtown that the bulk ofcity hall employees tend not to use the restaurants at lunchtime and do not make any signifigant contribution to the downtown economy … and use a lot of parking spaces that might be otherwise put in service for shoppers..
